Happy Halloween! We finally hit it with this holiday last night. I think we have three costumes now.
I have had ONE Halloween project on a low simmer all month, and that was to make Harry Potter-inspired pumpkins. A dear friend of mine who teaches Kindergarten at our school showed me board upon Pinterest board of book-character-inspired pumpkins early this fall; we’re still working on how to make it a fundraising project for our PTG (maybe next year), but in the meantime I was inspired. I asked Big if he wanted to make a Harry Potter pumpkin, and in usual Big fashion we couldn’t just do Harry, we had to do the whole crew!
I debated whether to go live pumpkin or fake plastic for this project, and figuring if we did it right I would want to hold onto them for ongoing decor I decided to go fake. Still wondering whether that was the right call, but given my investment in cheap wigs I am thinking yes, even if I will be challenged to find a box and location big enough to store seven pumpkin heads. But that’s tomorrow’s problem. Medium and I were lucky enough to be at Michael’s when they were having a three-hour 70% off retail plastic pumpkin blue light special of sorts, so plastic it is.
I spray painted these bad boys sort of a cream color, after a discussion with the Michael’s guy in charge of lockup (“What are you painting?” “Well, pumpkin heads, and they are all Caucasion so I think this ecru should work.”).
It took a few coats.
And then they sat in the driveway some more. Like a week.
Finally last night Big and I got the hot glue gun and sharpies out and got busy. It went much faster than I expected, and poof! Halloween decor is born!
Albus Dumbledore looks a bit Jerry Garcia, no?
And Harry looks a lot like a friend of my husband’s from college.
He Who Must Not Be Named even lurks around the corner.
So there it is: Halloween. Ta da! What are your big evening plans?
